Should I ditch my traditional sewn and opt for a closure or frontal Install?

in May 26, 2024

Closures and frontals are great alternatives to a traditional sew-ins with leave out but do come with some challenges. Let's discuss the pros first. With both closures and frontal installs the dreaded  blending your leave out is no issue since none of your natural hair is exposed. Blending your leave out with a traditional sewin can leave your natural hair broken and damaged if care is not taken.

Now for the challenges to closure and frontal installs. Both normally use an adhesive to maintain a blended or “melted” natural hairline and scalp appearance. Your initial install will most likely be at the salon but if adhesive needs to be added as the days go on you're normally responsible to maintain it at home. At home maintenance includes cleaning the adhesive off the lace before re-applying. This sounds simple but for closure and frontal newbies this can be challenging and frustrating no matter how many you tube videos you watch. Also this must be done carefully so hairloss isn't caused at the natural hairline. Closure and frontal installs don't generally last as long as traditional sewins. Closures and frontals can also be sewn on without adhesive but adhesive is the most popular method of installation because it creates a seamless skin look.

Now choosing between a closure and frontal. Closures are smaller than frontals. They cover the crown of the head allowing for side and middle partings.  Closures range in size from 4x4” to 7x7”. Partings and styling can be more limiting than frontals but maintenance is less. Frontals cover the entire hairline ear to ear. They allow for parting anywhere on the hairline: side, middle partings, fully pulled back styling such as ½ up ½ down styles. They are more maintenance than closures because they cover a larger area.

Closure and frontal installs are challenging but you're not gonna know if it's for you unless you try it. I find that for certain situations. When you have the urge to experiment with color or when you're totally over my hair for a bit and when you want a texture your natural hair just isn't capable of.
